Windows 98 degrag/color problems

When I change into a different application, the colors on
my monitor will change from being normal to very weird
(for example, my blue & white cloud scene will be purple, green, blue, etc. while the hourglass is on).I currently have it on 800 x 600 pixels and 256 colors.
My Compaq 5600 is also not showing the legend when I try to
do the defrag and will not complete it. How do I resolve
these problems. Thank you.

Hi, try increasing the colours on your monitor, for the cloud wallpaper to look good it needs more colours

As Paul says...I think you need to add more colours.
For the defrag, I find it best to do this in safe mode. Minimum drivers are loaded and it works faster. When you boot, press F8 and start up in safe mode, defrag and then reboot as your normally would. Works like a charm.
