Hey,

I have a Windows 98 workstation that is behaving rather badly. The reason that it is a Windows 98 workstation is that it has an app that runs on it that uses a vxd. For now the computer and its workstation do their job.

Normally on a cold boot, I get an hourglass that frequently shows up, and Windows functions run in slow motion.

When I end the task msgsvr32.exe in the task manager, everything goes to being hunky dory. Once I fixed this problem with ms article KB169987 (Msgsrv32 not responding when Computer hangs while Idle). The problem is back roughly 50 days later and it is not going away, even though all my power saving is disabled.

I will not always be around to make this happen.

How can I fix this?

Have you tried to re-extract this file off the Windows 98 cd and overwrite the old one? You can even run the system file checker to see if any files need to be replaced. You can find information on how to run SFC with the following link:

System Filer Checker

Let us know if any of this helps.

I ran SFC and found that user.exe was corrupted. I replaced that file, and business is as usual. Thank you very much for that advice. Collegues are telling me that msgsvr32.exe is constantly attacked by viruses, so I am scanning for viral activity as well as spyware.

Thanks again Enkrypted,

The internet is full of false information and dead ends.

Nope, back to its old hokeyness. No msgsvr32.exe in the taskmanager anymore though.

I had forgotten about the SFC.

Found your information helpful.

Thanks for jogging the old grey matter.
