Windows 98 boots to the wallpaper then.....nothing. 1

Everytime I go to boot up win 98 my wallpaper comes up, no icons appear and then the starup menu (Explorer bar) flashes on then off for a brief second......Then nothing!

I have a compaq deskpro-EN that used to work just fine....
I don't have the original 98 CD-ROM
I've used every boot disk I could get online.

My Win.ini & System.ini are empty is this the problem if so how do I fix it....what do I do??

reinstall.. get the restore disks by calling compaq

Start in Safe mode, and run you AV program to remove any viruses.

You can restore win.ini & system.ini together with their associated registry files by running scanreg /restore (boot to a dos prompt - same menu as getting into safe mode).

You will get a choice of dates to restore from - if you know when this problem started, pick the latest date before this (if possible).
