Hi all,
I had a friends computer to fix it which i did!! now hes been messing about with it installing files off a windows 98 disk and it now comes up with boot options (normal, safe mode, safe mode with networking etc.) but i cant see any reason why its doing this!! also whether this has anything to do with the problem but on shut down instead of getting the usual it is now safe to turn off your computer it beeps and cuts out, i dont even see that screen!

any help is much appreciated

Thanks Luke Holder

First off the turning off like that is called fast shutodwn. Go to start, run, then type msconfig and hit enter or ok. You should see somewhere on there the option for fast shutdown. Also run scandisk and defrag (scandisk first then defrag and disable any screesavers while running it). Also just to be sure system files are in tact put system disc in, go to start run then type sfc and let it scan for any missing or corrupt files. Give this a go and let me know if that helps any.

thabks for the reply, it was actually to do with the CPU fan (i think) being turned off to early by the motherboard which then causes a CPU fan failure which causes the beep and the shut down!!!

that was an option i didnt know about thought so thank you

this actually solves the problem though!!

Thanks!

back again, any reason why it now restarts when i choose shut down??

thanks

Hm it shouldnt be restarting when you shutdown. Are you running windows 98 or windows 98se? Also did you run sfc?

98se and have done that couple of times before (the sfc)

do you think it could be power supply related??

thanks

anythings possible with computers however I really doubt that. When you shut down the computer and it goes to the screen saying you may now turn off your computer, does it restart then before you touch any buttons or after you press the power button? My moms computer has a crap power switch and does that so thats why im asking. If thats not it im guessing try resetting bios and maybe motherboard starting to go bad.

when i shut down i dont see that screen it just goes straight in to booting up!! sometime i still get a beep!

ok ill try that monday thanks for your help!!

Luke

hey tried it but didnt work and ive just tried a different power supply and CPU fan but still get the beep now! its shutting down properly now but getting the beep again!

Thanks

Is it just one beep when you shut it off or when you turn it on? Is it a sequence of beeps?

its a continious beep for i would about 2 seconds before it shuts down, i disconnected the speaker BUT it still beeps!

The beep your hearing isnt from your main speakers, theres a speaker inside the case. Its usually on the front of it but not always. Thats the speaker you hear. Im not sure why its beeping when it shuts down however heres something you can do to figure out what the beeps mean. Download this program belarc advisor from link below. Identify motherboard, look it up and find the bios name then look up bios beep codes and it will tell you. If this confuses you just post what belarc says your motherboard is and ill see what I can find.

The speaker I disconnected was the one inside the case connected to the motherboard it doesnt have external speakers connected to it at the moment!

I shall have a look if i get the chance too!

thanks

The only speaker left is the modem speaker. So its probally using it. Ive seen computers do that.

as far as i know it doesnt have a modem in it, certainly not a pci modem dont think it got a built on one either though!
