On the required shutdown after installation the computer hung on the shutdown screen. Then upon restart the computer updated the system settings (with the animated drum icon) then the system hung just before displaying the desktop icons and start menu bar. The system still responds (alt-control-delete brings up the taskbar) but the only program running is the antivirus. The dos registry checker does not find any problems and safemode hangs in the same place.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I run Win98 and my
hardware barely took DirectX 8 which got installed with FILA Soccer2003(The machine is late'99 with an Nvidia Riva TNT2 Pro AGP 2x-4x 32Mb)...I had to go to their web-site and get an updated driver for Dx8 to work(not enough hardware acceleration)....and another machine with an ATI Rage Pro AGP2x wouldn't work and I haven't followed up on that yet.....
so, I'm going to assume your video display PCI/AGP hardware can't handle the hardware acceleration needed....

In the meantime....Restart to a command prompt and type scanreg /restore...(notice the space between the "g" and "/")..hit Enter....and choose the oldest (5-days) good copy of the Registry.....using arrows on keyboard.
This will put your reg back to the way it was 5 days ago....

My machine is late 2000, and it runs fine with 9.0b...and it has Windows 98SE.

Maybe they havent tested it properly with the original Win98...

Use microsoft help if possible

do a thorough virus scan and trojan and spybots, there are several sites for online scanning, i highly reccomend that you do this

I see the thank you which is nice.....but what if anything actually helped....this would be useful to know...thanks
