This has been bugging me! When the laptop in question (Dell Latitude) is asked to print (Canon bj-10ex) (from any application) it brings up the printer settings box. When you then go OK, it hangs straight away.

I have checked the IRQ, they look fine with no conflicts. I have checked the hard drive space, which is fine (no spooling errors), I have removed and re-installed the printer.

Can anybody help cure my insanity!??!

Probably more like a temporary (spool) file sitting on your hard drive interfering.

Have you deleted all *.tmp and ~*.* files from your entire hard drive? If not, close all applications and do so. Maybe even clean out your C:\windows\temp folder while you're at it. Run a scandisk and reboot. Try printing again.

Does anything else plug into the Parallel port?

Eg. Zip drive, scanner?

Also was any device other than your Canon printer ever installed to use the parallel port?
Nothing else is plugged into it, I think it was once set set up for a HP Deskjet printer, but that's your lot.

I'll try the file removal thing today and let you know how that goes.

HP Deskjet printers used to or probably still does come with Printer Status software. I have found this status software may be conflicting use of the parallel port.

Also you should try changing your parallel port mode from ECP to anything else (EPP, Standard, Compatible, SPP).

ECP uses DMA3 and may be causing your problems. You will need to go into the CMOS settings for this.

You may need to delete the ECP parallel port in device manager and have windows redetect the new port.
Deleted all the temp files, laptop now works, and my support status is back again.
Thanks to all for your help and suggestions.
Dreamboat - you can now smile smugly to yourself.
