Hello,

I created a new local user account for a friend who is staying with me for a while on my laptop. The account has only Guest Rights but when i tested the account I was able to delete some test folders on the Root Dir. What am i doing wrong? Thanks all. BigBadJoe.

Yes it makes you wonder why they [M$} bothered with "Guest access" which doesn't quite do what you expect.

If you run Windows 7 Pro or above activate the "Administrator" account (Tutorial) and use the "Local Group" policy editor (gpedit.msc)to limit that user account

Thanks for the info my friend, will check out the link. Have a good one. BigbadJoe.

Are you working with the built-in "Guest Account" and enabling it, or are you turning on "Guest Mode" within a standard user account? If it's the latter (and it sounds like it is), then there is an additional option called "Lock drives (advanced)" where you can prevent the account from writing and deleting folders/files outside of the user profile.

This article explains in more detail:

If you want to look at the built-in Guest Account, check out this:

Looks like Guest Mode is gone in Windows 7 Pro.

I'm pretty certain Guest Mode was removed from all RTM versions of Windows 7 (it existed in the betas)

Yep, you're right. Sorry about that. I used SteadyState in XP, but never fiddled with Guest Mode (though I read about it). Strange they ended up removing it from the final product without an explanation, at least I couldn't find one.

Bigbadjoe,
Guess your only option is setting up a Guest Account and locking it down (aside from paying for 3rd party software like DeepFreeze).
