I have a small network at home that consists of a Windows XP Pro desktop PC, SCO Unix File Server and Windows 7 Pro wireless laptop.

My problem is that I have to ping the other systems within Window 7 before I can telnet to the Unix system or RDP to the Windows XP Pro. I have searched the web and this forum to no avail.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Does it make any difference in Windows 7 checking the Telnet checkboxes via Control Panel/ Programs and Features/ Turn Windows Features on or off/ Telnet, and making sure they are ticked?

Do the devices have static addresses?
Are you connecting via IP address or DNS name?

When I try to connect to the Unix box using ICE.TCP Plue, I am using a name I used in the hosts file. When I try to connect to the Windows XP box, I am using the node name. I do not have a entry in the hosts file.

The Windows PCs are served by my Verizon Actiontec router. The Unix File Server has a static IP address.

Thanks for the help...

Going to try this question again...

I have a Windows XP Pro (winxp) Desktop, Windows 7 Pro Laptop (win7) and a Unix File Server on a LAN in my house. The windows systems are DHCP and the file server is static.

I can connect from winxp to win7 using RDP and telnet to Unix File Server. I cannot from win7 to winxp using RDP or telnet to Unix File Server. The only exception is when I ping the host first then I can connect.

I am a programmer and a novice when it comes to networking. I can do the basics, but thats it. I must be missing something. I have searched the web and this forum. Can someone please help!

Thank you very much in advance!

Did you try Ben's suggestion to forward ports on the router? You can change the settings on the actiontec router, I did on my actiontec DSL router at my office.

I hope everyone's holidays were good.

A week or so ago, I finally resolved my problem. It was caused by me setting up an IP address within VMware. I did not have to do that, DHCP works just fine. Everything is working like I expect.

Thanks to all of you who tried to help me.
