Windows 5.0 Mobile Won't Check POP3 Account

I just bought a pocket PC running Win 5.0 mobile. I set up my POP3 account and have it set to check my mail every 2 minutes. I can check it sucessfully when I click on the send/receive function and it sometimes checks for new mail automatically but it isn't consistent. Hours will have passed where I know I should have received a mail. But only when I manually check for new mail will it find mail from hours ago. Why won't my device consistently check mail every two minutes like I have set it to do?

How are you connecting the PDA to the net/network? and is that connection consistent?
