Just wondering what's involved in setting up two ethernet cards on 1 PC running 2k server. Each card will have it's own public IP. As it stands now both cards are installed with their own IP and I lose all connectivity when both are active. Disabling one or the other reissues connectivity. The idea is that each ethernet card will provide different hosting services. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

hardware issues? application issues? domain/gpo issues? RRAS issues?

need more info to develop a meaningful solution...

Probably an issue with routing. What are they connected to? When both cards are enabled, do you have a gateway for both? Try removing one gateway and see what happens. Are you trying to access the Internet with both? For 2 internal networks, you may need to add static routes....

Yeah definitely the biggest problem I've found with Multihomed servers is that two default gateways are specified. Only the one should be specified, the other left blank.

hey guys,

how do you setup/configure dual nics one for
the public network and one for private(like 192.168.x.x)
for running a centralized backup on a gig backbone.

thanks

have about 10 servers each on public network,
trying to setup each servers' 2nd gig nic as
a backend network so we can run backups between each server
at nite using a 192.168.x.x

what other info do you need ??
thanks Matt

If I understand correctly, all you need to do is set up the IP for the second NIC with your private address. Those NICs (192.168.x.x) will only be able to see each other and the public will not be able to see the private...
Maybe I am misunderstanding...

we did but didnt know we didnt have to put the gateway in, all the servers had dns issues and couldnt see each other.
i needed to know what the subnets/dns/wins entries should be if anything or left blank.

Well for the subnet mask I would just use a default class C, 255.255.255.0. As far as DNS, that depends on how the servers are getting their DNS now. And what function they perform. You could set up DNS on the one running your backup software, but I don't know if that will conflict with what you currently have running...

on the back-end, you want each server to only know the backup server... to avoid looping issues... default gateway, etc. may not be simple unless they're all on the same hub/switch...
