I have a strange issue where a used pc that I bought has no video or keyboard control until windows 2000 pro starts to load. My windows 2000 is not loading correctly now, and with no video or keyboard access, not only can I not see whats, wrong, but I cant start safe mode from dos. I do have another pc available, however, and would like to know if there is a way to make a boot disk that will open win2k in safe mode (and hopefully load drivers for my cd rom so that I can repair pro/upgrade to xp pro) Simply putting in the xp pro disk at startup doesnt help. All advice is greatly appreciated.

Here are a few "eliminate the variables" answers.

1. If your screen displays the BIOS bootup info against the original black screen, then you do have video at that point.

2. If you can hit the DEL key and get into the BIOS control screens during the initial startup, then you do have Keyboard at that point.

Try those steps first. If neither of those work, then it sounds like your BIOS and/or hardware is messed up somehow.

Beyond that, I am not certain that this answer is what you are looking for, but to find a variety of BOOT DISK software variations go to either of the below web pages and see if they have an answer for you:

Assuming you CAN see the POST and BIOS screens at startup, and then when it goes into that black screen with the white bar, hit [F8] there and you will have options, including going into the safe mode.

In most cases, with Plug and Pray cards being the norm, the hardware should be at least functional until you get the true drivers for them.

If your still having a problem then you probably have to go through the BIOS and figure out what you have turned off and what needs to be turned back on.

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately, I get no post or bios screen. As I said, it would normally show absolutely nothing until the windows logon screen. Hopefully the boot disk will work to start up windows, then I might be able to resolve the bios/video issue. I'd appreciate continued help, and will update as soon as I have found something that worked or tryed something else that hasn't worked.

Are you NTFS or FAT32??? Learn something everyday or you wasted a day of your life.

When it does finally start and show something try a reset. The monitor might just be on its way out and has to be warmed up before it will show anything. You could also startup and hit the del key repeatedly until the monitor warms up and it shows as being in the setup screen.

Thanks all for your help. I tried something new and it worked for me. Here's one for the case file as the solution was rather simple. I removed my bios battery, thus restoring the bios to the original. Once I restored the power, not only was I able to complete my install, but now I see the post/bios screeens. Again thanks for all your help.
