Windows 2k Continuously Reboots

My Win 2k system continuously reboots after I removed an activeX control that was thought to be spawning multiple popup windows in Internet Explorer.

I removed the ActiveX control by selecting the following in IE:
- Tools
- Internet Options
- In the Temporary Internet files I selected View Objects
- I deleted the object from there.

I then rebooted my machine and it now continuously reboots. I cannot even boot into safe mode to correct the issue. I have tried every boot option and each time it will bring up the WIN2K window then error out and reboot.
The error screen pops up and disappears to fast to capture the exact error.

Does anyone have a clue on how I can recover? Or am I going to have to re-install.. I do not have an Emergency Repair disk for this system.. (I know.. I know.. I need to have one...)

You could try repair without ERD - it will look for win2k installation and use the info from hard disk if it finds one.

yes, try booting from cd and running repair.

Just for kicks....can you try pressing Pause/Break Key when that error flashes? Maybe you can see what the specific error is, at least you'll have some footprints to trace your issue.

I have tried to repair without the ERD. It comes back to the previous screen and ask if I want to repair the system press enter. Then the cycle begins again....

I don't think this will work but can I try an ERD from another system or will the data from that ERD be machine specific data?

I will attempt the pause/break to capture the error.

Have you looked at your hardware? Look on your mobo and see if you have any corrosion around the capisitors. Strip your pc of any additional hardware you don't need to boot. Does it still reboot? Have you checked your memory? Sounds hardware related if it won't boot into windows.

ERD is specific to installation which produced it - so i wouldn't use another. When you try repair without ERD, what does it actually say? i've had instances where it couldn't find an installation - even though there was one there - but it says this (can't find installation message). Otherwise always gives opportunity to repair. Are you getting can't find installation message? Or something else.

Ps. When you deleted activex control - do you know what file was called? If you could get copy of file, you could put it back using recovery console & a floppy. Just an idea!

Yeah it basically tells me it cannot find an instance of my previous installation. Then it ask me the standard if you want to repair your system.

Here is the play-by-play:
- If you have the Emergency Repair disk, press Enter
- If you do not have the Emergency Repair disk, press L.
Setup will attempt to locate Windows 2000 for you.

I press L .... it states it is searching then returns the
following message:

Setup cannot find a Windows 2000 installation to repair. Unless you provde the Emergency Repair disk for the installation you want to repair, Setup cannot make the repairs.

I wish I would have wrote down the control that I deleted, however in my infinant wisdom did not...

I have went down the hardware path... Eliminated all hardware except video, hd, etc... still same result..

I am afraid she is a goner.. Who wants to call the time of death..

You could try installing Win2k over itself.
