I pretty much know the difference between Windows XP and 2K. My real question is this.

I have several users who state a specific software package runs faster on Windows 2K than it does Windows XP. They try to tell me it is a compatibility issue with XP. I don't buy that. I think it is a resource issue between XP and 2K. the resource issue to me is the extras that XP install and use. I would like to know what extras I can turn off or get rid of. I have done all the driver updates. I have turned off the Indexing Service. I would like everyone's opinion on what else I can turn off that may not be necessary to free up resources. Can you help?

There should not be a noticable difference.

. Use a right-click on My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Performance and set Visual Effects to best performance, and under the Advanced tab, set for Programs and not background tasks.

. Then see Black Viper's site:

Also:

. Have you examined the program with the Compatability Analyzer XP Compatability Toolkit? There are additional tools to customize the way the application is run under XP:

. See JeffPr's notes in this FAQ: faq779-4784

The program is compatible with XP. I have verified it runs fine. The "Power Users", the big crunchers SWEAR this particular application is slower under XP than 2K. I myself have seen it takes about 45 sec longer to come up. To me it is not that big a deal. But to these engineers it is unacceptable. I have turned off all the visual enhancements I could think of.
I agree that there should not be much difference compatibility wise. However XP uses more resources than 2K. My quest it to find these resources and free up as much as I can and prove that the app works fine with XP.

You could time the execution in both settings:
There are a lot of variables involved in this, however, including relative disk speeds, defragmentation status, processors involved, RAM amount and speed, virtual memory settings, etc.. You might try making the program files for the application continguous on the hard disk if a local application:

If the application and/or data is being accessed from a network share, please advise.

If this is a CAD program or some other large, graphic application, keep in mind that there might be slight differences in the video drivers for each OS (even if the hardware is exactly the same), that could account for the time difference.

It is a CAD program. Pro/E 2001 to be exact. We are using Pro/E certified NVIDIA drivers for the Quadro base cards.
