Windows 2003 Server - ADPREP command

Hi all,

At the moment I have several domain controllers which are Windows 2000 Server. I have a new Dell Power vault that came pre-installed with Windows 2003 server which I want to make a domain controller. At the moment though I can't do this as I need to run the ADPREP.exe on my current domain controllers. The ADPREP utility is normally located on the Windows 2003 Server CD. The problem is that I did not get the Windows 2003 media with my Dell server, only a recovery CD. Does anyone know a way round this?

There is an updated copy of ADPREP in SP1. I would download a copy of Windows 2003 SP1 and use the /t /c switches to extract the files. Then you should have access to it.

Hi,

Ok I am still having problems with this.

Here is what I have done so far:

1) As recommended I have extracted the contents of Windows 2003 Server SP1
2) I copied this folder to my Windows 2000 Server and made sure the permissions were open on the directory for copying etc
3) I then navigated to this folder using the command prompt and ran adprep /forestprep
4) I then go this error

Adprep created the log file ADPrep.log under C:\WINNT\System32\debug\adprep\logs\20051010115511 directory.

Adprep copied file C:\i386\schema.ini from installation point to local machine under directory C:\WINNT.

Adprep was unable to copy file C:\i386\sch14.ld_ from installation point to local machine under directory C:\WINNT\System32.

[User Action]

Check the log file Adprep.log in the system root System32\Debug\Adprep\Logs directory for more information.

Adprep encountered a Win32 error.

Error code: 0x2 Error message: The system cannot find the file specified..

Adprep was unable to copy setup files from installation point to local machine.

[Status/Consequence]

Adprep has stopped without making changes.

[User Action]

Make sure you run adprep.exe under the directory that contains the following files: schema.ini, sch*.ldf, dcpromo.cs_ and 409.cs_. The recommended way is running adprep.exe from installation media, such as CD-ROM or network share. Check the log file Adprep.log in the system root System32\Debug\Adprep\Logs directory for more information.

Adprep encountered a Win32 error.

Error code: 0x2 Error message: The system cannot find the file specified..

5) Have I done the right thing to make a Windows 2003 Server a domain controller on an existing domain? What I have noticed from the error log is that I can't locate the file sch14.ld anywhere

That file is a compressed file, so it should end in an underscore. Have you searched for it with the correct name?

Are you performing this action while logged on with an account that is a member of the schema admins group?

verify that the account being used has write permissions to the System32 directory.

I have searched for it with the correct name and also wild carding it as sch* and it is definatly not present.

I am logged in as domain admin which is a member of schema admins.

The domain admin also had write permissions to the System32 directory.

Any other ideas?

Hmm, no idea as of yet.

You need to run some tests. Run a DCDIAG and NETDIAG and report the results. Also verify that your DNS is set up correctly.

Your server NIC should only list Internal DNS servers and the DNS Snap-In should list the ISP DNS in the forwarders tab.

Hi Mark,

These particular servers are within a test domain I have created for this testing. The DNS configuration is fine, I am certain of this.

DCDIAG showed: This gave an error “The procedure entry point DSIsmangledDnW could not be located in the dynamic link library NTDSAPI.dll” which I think may be because the DCDIAG utility I am using is the wrong version?

NETDIAG showed: all passed successfully

I am more thinking this can only be done with the 2003 Server CD as that is what the error implies.

If running this on the 2000 box you need to use the version of DCDIAG from the 2000 CD.

Can you just clarify this for me:

In order for my 2003 Server to become a Domain Controller I need to run adprep on my existing 2000 Server?

Yes, the ADPREP needs to be run on the Schema Master for the 2000 domain.

Ok so I am trying the right thing then.

I have ordered the media kit to see if that solves my problem.

My 2003 Server Media arrived a little while ago and sure enough the adprep command work immeditaly when running from the CD.

My 2003 Server is now a Domain Controller!!!
