I have a 2 node cluster running AD on Windows 2000 server. The servers need replacing so i'm think of going down to one server on a ESX platform to run the AD. I'm going to use a Windows 2003 Server instead of Windows 2000. Can I just join the windows 2003 server to the current domain to replicate the sysvol and users and policies etc or is this not the correct way to do it?

You can join the W2003 server to domain but before you run dcpromo you need to run ADPREP and DOMAINPREP to update the schema for 2003.

You might also need to worry about DNS, DHCP and WINS services. Oh, and new machine will have to be a Global Catalog server.

Even with ESX, VMotion, HA etc. you would be best to have a 2nd DC on a different ESX node.

Thankyou. Are you saying that I need to run ADPREP and DOMAINPREP on the Windows 2000 server before or run those commands on the 2003 server?

If you'd done a little research yourself, first, then you'd have found a thousand places that would have indicated you have to run the commands on your W2K server, and not only that, but your schema master.

While it is easier to ask first, it's more appropriate to at least try to do a bit of research yourself.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.
