Hi ppl, this is my first post in these forums. I'm running Windows 2003 Server R2. I installed it with no problem, in the licensing part, I chose per server. It has never asked me for any administrator password during installation which was odd to me, but because it's my first time installation, I thought it's just ok! Now that i want to login, I enter "administrator" as my username and then nothing for password (I reset password to empty by some sort of linux program that I tested before on other machines and really worked). it doesn't give me password authentication error, it just says:

The system can not log you on due the following error:
the specified domain either doesn't exist or couldn't be contacted

and I have no option to change any domain or anything! I dunno what to do, how can I tell it I don't want any domain, because really I'm not on any sort of domain right now!

thanks,
bijan

For it to fix it's self, it must have assigned its self as a Domain Controller. As soon as it hold the DC role, you can not log on locally.

I would never trust "password resetter programs".

Hope this Helps.

I find it hard to believe it never prompted you for a password if the server was setup correctly.

If it's a Domain Controller and you used the linux password reset utils, you likely just borked your server.

hey ppl, thank you for your quick and accurate answer. Actually I'm running Win2003Server on a Linux using Qemu as the emulator, last night that I was installing it, I noticed that it's stock! So, I just shut down the virtual machine (coz I was too sleepy), in the morning I tried to Repair the last night's installation, so, it might be the reason it didn't ask for any password, I mean something was missed. Anyway, I'm gonna install it again, I just wanted to know if I'm doing anything stupid and if it's any chance I revive the system.

Very unlikely you can get anything back, and whatever your host OS is for a virtual machine, the virtual OS uses its only file system and sourcecode, so if you have installed Win03 on a Linux virtualmachine, then if you were to use a password reset, you would have to use a Win03 one.
Im guessing, since you are using virtual machines, this is probably a test environment, especially if you cant remember the password for it. So I would just say scrap it and start over.

Hope this Helps.

thanks ncotton, it's what I was thinking about too. I'm gonna do it.

Another question that goes a little off topic, but you said since it's a virtual machine it should be for test purposes, I wana ask you guys (& gals!), don't you use this virtual machine concept in your everyday work? I mean virtual machines weren't just made for home play, they're for production use and all the fuss about'em, do you use them actually for work or it's really just for game in most ppl's idea?
