Hi

I am trying to implement a remote access L2TP/IPSec vpn over a LAN. Currently I have set up RRAS, client and certificates but received error messages like 'Error 678: The Remote Computer did not respond'.

Recently I have set up a similar connection L2TP/IPSec vpn between two routers and this works fine. I have exhaustively gone through all Microsoft Troubleshooting causes but still cannot get a connection. My suspicion is that it is a certificate problem even though I have tried reinstalling Certificate Services a few times and in Enterprise and Stand-alone modes.

Can anyone offer any help on this as I have been working on it for some days now? Thanks in advance.

If you are still having this problem, can you confirm if each of the ports are setup and enabled for both RAS and Routing Access

Right click ports and double click PPTP and L2TP respectivly and ensure that

Remote Access Connections
Demand Dialing Connections

are both ticked....

hope this helps.... good luck and happy new year

Thanks for your post scanjam and happy new year.

I have since been able to connect with this L2TP VPN over a LAN however I still cannot with the same setup [except change of IP address] from a dial up through the Internet.

All firewall settings should be fine as I have passed through another L2TP VPN from a fixed IP with a broadband connection.

The VPN Server is running Windows 2003 and the client XP SP1. It seems it is something to do with the dial up. Any ideas?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
James
