Our company just installed a wireless lan controller. We have a windows 2003 server running dns and dhcp.
When running ipconfig on the machines it give back a dhcp server of 1.1.1.1. I know this is a virtual number because it is pointing back to the dhcp server on the 2003 box. Do I need to set up a dns host record on the windows server with 1.1.1.1.???

Appreciate the help.

Ted, you haven't provided enough information as to how you want use this wireless environment;

- Is this wireless controller part of your existing network? If so you should be setting the controller to pull IP addresses from your existing DHCP server (although be ver careful to ensure you secure your wireless envrionment).

- If this is a separate network then first of all you will need to change the subnet for your wireless network to a private one 10.x.x.x 172.16.x.x 192.168.x.x for example

Please provide more info regarding what you would like to do here.

Thanks for the response. The wireless controller is on the same network but a different vlan. All wireless laptops could connect to the server before dhcp was turned off from the "cisco" group. DHCP was turned on in the 2003 box and turned off of the router. Ever since then, wireless laptops have had trouble getting into the network. I saw a post somewhere about needing to make a dns record but have not seen another one since. Could this be causing the problem.?? All other ipconfig /all information looks correct. DHCP looks correct on the server.

Hope this helps. We are just switching over to windows platform so knowledge right now is limited.

Ted, (other folks may need to chime in on this one or you should post this in a Cisco forum but I'll give it a try from my best recollection) if the Win2K3 server is on a different VLAN from the wireless controller;

1. You should create a separate scope/subnet range for the wirelss network on the Win2K3 DHCP server
2. You will need to enable an ip helper on the router in order to tell the wireless controller where the DHCP server is.

Thanks. I have created a separate scope for that subnet. I appreciate the help. If you think of anything else, please let me know. I am going out to that location to "test" the host record idea.
