I have a Windows 2003 server that i'm trying to promote to a Domain Controller. I currently have 7 DCs and 1 Exchange server on 6 subnets. I'm trying to promote this server to a DC to use on our newest facility (aka my 7th subnet) and when i run dcpromo on this server it fails and says that the forest is not compatible and i need to run adprep. When go to the schema master and run the adprep (using both /forestprep and /domainprep switches) it tells me that Active Directory has already been updated. This makes sense to me because i have 2 DCs running Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003. Why would this be happening? I've even tried bringing the server onto the same subnet as the schema master and that didn't work either (good thing because i hate changing IPs on DCs that never goes smoothly). Thanks for and help you can give me.

Is this new server the first R2 server that you're adding? If so, you need to run adprep from the second R2 CD, and not the first CD. It needs to be run on the schema master, with a schema admins account.

Thanks a ton. I was using the adprep on disk 1. I was assuming the latest server was an R2 but i guess it wasn't. Guess thats what happens when you ASSume. Thanks 58sniper. PS These fourms are one of my favorite sources when i need help because i always get an answer.
