I can't seem to get the DI-30 working in Windows 2003. I'm out of ideas. Here is what I have tried thus far:

- driver installs fine (2.08 sc2k.sys)
- I have the latest flash version
- ostape.exe says it's ready for use
- I've cleaning the RSM database
- all tests pass fine
- I am administrator, so I have the privs
- tried the MS patch 817688

The error I get from ntbackup is:

Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate.

Any ideas?

Does this happen with all your tapes? from the message it's saying there is an inconsistancy on the media...did you try formatting using ostape? I'm also a little concered with it reporting C not being a valid drive..

Yeah, it seems to happen with all my tapes, including ones with data on them and unused tapes.

The format button is grayed out in ostape as well.

In the removable storage manager in computer management, is the drive and the media recognzied? are you able to format from there?

Well, I don't have much experience in the RSM MMC interface, but I don't see anything to erase/format.

I can see the drive and tape. I can free tapes, and they end up in the free pool under miniQIC for the OnStream DI-30 library. But after that I don't see anything else that could let me erase or format.

Do you have the same drive (first generation 30GB ADR) working on 2003 fine?

Thanks for the help in debugging this issue!

So if you right click on the media listed under the drive itself in the removable storage manager...what options do you have available from there?

All I see are Eject & Free under All Tasks.

I have done the Free operation on tapes, and it completes according to the Work Queue. The tape then shows up under Free/miniQIC as Available on the OnStream DI-30 device. But still, nothing but Eject & Free.

I've done this with many tapes, some brand new, some with existing data on them.

Well, I think I just figured it out. I had Veritas Backup Exec installed... after removing it I can backup just fine with ntbackup!

I'll see if I can still get Backup Exec working, but at least I know the hardware/drivers aren't bad!

Hi,

I seem to be experiencing the same issues as you have had, however. My system backs up fine using ntbackup when using a new tape, when attempting to use a tape with data already on it i get the error message you got (an inconsistency was encountered on the media......)

Now I also do not have an option to format the tape only to mark it as free, after doing so the backup job will sucsessfully run.

There is no other backup software installed and the system is running SBS 2003.

If you could share any more info regarding this issue it would be much appreicated.

Actually had this same problem. Needed to call PSS and get two different hotfixes from them to completely resolve this issue with NTBACKUP.exe. It should be in Service Pack 2 when it comes out. HotFixes are 114390 and 144560. I am unsure of both KB's one of them is 828402 but the other one is escaping me right now. They are free.

DavidMcSpadden had it right on the money. The two KB articles are 828402 and 817688.
