have Microsoft Small Business Server 2000.

xp and 98 clients can't get internet
on xp client..."applying your Personal settings" show when you log in for a painfully long time.

clients are dhcp off of the server.

2000 server had dns server configured to have ISP dns address in the Forwarders field.

2000 server has dhcp enabled

help!!

If 98 and XP clients can't hit the net, what can? Can the server itself?

Sorry silly question but is the ipconfig from the server which is mutli-homed to the ISP??

Just brainstorming:

Are the clients picking up a DHCP lease, do the machines show up on your DHCP Admin console?

What does ipconfig look like on a typical client? Can you ping the server?

If the server is new, are the client machines dropped on the network correctly?

Do the machines need any proxy connection settings, or are they auto-detect?

Is the server plugged into any switches you may have correctly (silly, but it's happened to ah... err... friend of mine)?

on xp client..."applying your Personal settings" show when you log in for a painfully long time.

That kind of feels like there is a user authentication issue, regardless of internet access. Is it still a long time if you unplug your gateway all together, disconnecting from the web?

You don't say if you have done the obvious which would be to configure your clients to use the Proxy Server. Set the clients to point to your server using port 8080.

If that does not do it then...

I would check your Routing and Remote Access. Make sure it is configured for both VPN and to Allow Network Computers to Access the Internet using a single IP.

To configure this you will need to open up RRAS in Administrative tools. Right click your server and choose to disable RRAS. Right click again to enable and choose the the mode you want, VPN, Router or Both.

Then set the clients browsers to Auto detect.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark
