Windows 2000/Windows 98 Microsoft Network Problem? 3

May be friends here can help

We have around 20 PC in our office running under Windows 98, and connected to one another using Microsoft Network utility for sharing. Hardware is about standard Compex 100MBs ethernet cards. On Windows 98 all is fine

We tried to upgrade some PC to Windows 2000 and we were warned of problems related to networking.

And yes we tested this with one machine. Simply the machine can not communicate with others.

Any solution to this one beside upgrading all machines.

Just a new network card. Thats it! I suggest you do upgrade to Win2k Pro though, get the benifits of the server.

Win2k pro is one of the best desktop Windows OS's for networking. I dont know who stated you will have problems related to networking. The only problems are configuration issues. if you dont have things configured correctly it wont see others.

Doe the machine not ping others? You cant see them in Network Places? Try tinstalling netBEUI on a couple of other machines. Then on the Win2K machine Install ONLY netBEUI and see if you can see any other PC's in Network Plcaes (Same as network neighborhood). If you can then it is a simple TCPIP problem. I havent tried your ideas yet but I also seem to share your thought on hardware configuration settings, being a bit different in the way they look to us compared to previous versions of windows

We usually set up machines to detect DSN automatically. Could this also be a problem?. Should we get exact adresses?.

I am going to try out tonite and promise to get back with the results

By the way, this forum(Tek tips) is the fastest and the best w.r.t responses I get. Keep up the good work pals

Automatic DNS requires DHCP and WINS I believe. Do you have these set up? Also it wont hurt anything to manually input the addresses. Keep us informed. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.
