Hello again!
I hope, I'm not bothering you all but I have a new problem with my server. Since I have installed Active Directory my server takes 20(!) minutes to boot. First everything starts normal and when it comes to the point where is says "preparing network connections" it stops there for about 10 minutes. Have you got any idas how i could speed this up?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Check your event log. Sounds like you're having DNS or AD issues. If you find anything respond back and I'll try to help out.

Check your IP configs: ipconfig /all. Type nslookup at the command prompt to if you can qury your dns server. It sounds like your computer cannot find the dns server to authenticate you and it is logging you on with cashed credentials.

MS published a message that Active Directory doesn't play well
when you have the value ScopeID set in the registry key (HKLM\System\CCS\Services\NetBT\parameters)

I was using scopeid with netbios in my w9x home net and had
this problem when trying to set up w2k server with active directory
Removed scopeid and the @#$^&*%^*& thing ran fine.

MS discourages use of scopeid with w2k server, reasonable but
it was hard to find info about this

max5,

I have the same problem too. Yes, CoolClark is right. I think is the DNS problem.

My Win2k server is not connect to the internet and I don't want to register my domain name with DNS. I have try to disable the the DNS service but this doesn't help. My win2k server still needs 10min to start.

DNS is REQUIRED to run AD. If nothing else just install DNS on the same server. Once you have it installed you'll need to tweak the registry a bit because netlogon starts before DNS but it will solve your bootup probs.

Hi!
How can I tweak the registry? I looked at HKLM\System\CCS\Services\NetBT\parameters and didn't find the the value ScopeID. Do I have to tweak anything else?

I ve got the same probleme since i'm directly wired on the net.

My server takes 1h30 to boot.It seems that it tries to log on the dns of my ISP.
Someone can help me ?

You must use Windows 2000 DNS or Unix BIND 8.2.2 (patch 7) because Active Directory will try to dynamically update during boot up the resources records these versions of DNS support. Older versions do not support resource records.

Windows 2000 should autoregister itself with its own DNS - if not, manually create the initial DNS host record and it should create the resource records (they look like "_TCP", etc. in DNS) if you are running Actice Directory

So, if you haven't, set up your own internal DNS and forward external requests to your ISPs DNS. And/or add your ISPs DNS addresses as additional DNS servers in your IP configuration but keep your DNS as the first one in the list.

Check the DNS and Directory Service entries in the Event Viewer for leads.

Pax,
Richard
