Hey,

We upgraded to a Windows 2000 server a while back and ever since we have been experiencing a file locking problem as described below:

It generally appears with HTML files and the use of Dreamweaver MX 2004. When I try to open the file through Dreamweaver I get the error message 'A sharing violation has occurred while accessing <some-network-path>.' These files have usually been recently accessed by a Mac computer on the network too, but not always. The only other two computers that would generally access these files are Windows XP Professional. There is a further Windows 2000 machine on the network, but that would generally not go near the files.

The only way that I can resolve this problem currently is by rebooting the Windows 2000 Server. However, eventually all the files will become locked again.

I have trawled the web with very little success. Most solutions blame Anti-Virus software running on the local machine, but we don't have any running on the server currently. In fact, no programs run directly off the File Server. I suppose there are 2 main suspects here, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 and the Macs.

Has anyone ever experienced similar problems, and if so, how did they go about resolving it?

Thanks very much for taking the time to read :) Any suggestions are very welcome as this is driving myself and my colleagues insane :p

Cheers,

Ebow

When this happens next time, check the Shared Folders section under computer management to see if the server says the file is in use. If so, make note of who/what is currently accessing the file.

Hey aznluvsmc,

Great tip. Thank you. How I missed that I will never know. I can now see who is locking all the files on the server. It is one specific Mac (OSX G5). It has a bunch of files open in Write+Read mode. I can close individual files there and it will allow me to open them. Unfortunately I can't select more than one file at a time, so it's a bit of a pain when it has a whole site open including images!

I suppose the question now is, does anyone have any idea how to stop the Mac from locking files on the Win 2k server? Is this an account set-up issue or something to do with the Mac's setup itself?

Again any suggestions will be met will extreme appreciation :)

Did anybody working on the MAC actually open the file? If so, did they close it properly when they finished?
