Windows 2000 Server - Extend C: partition ?? 1

Is it possible to extend the C: partition in Win2k server, by using some unused space on another partition, but without rebuilding ? Raid 5 over 5 disks, with a c: and an E: partition. C: is almost full and is causing us problems. E: has a few GB free and we'd like to allocate 200MB from there to the C: drive.

Not without third-party utilities or a backup and restore.

You could add another drive/raid set and mount it inside any ntfs folder.

You just want to add 200 MB? That's so little... are you sure there aren't things on the C: drive you can move/remove? Old backup files from Windows Updates? Move the pagefile? Other things? How large is the C: drive? What's using up the space?

That's funny, I didn't even look at the amount of space he was talking about. On many servers, moving the backed up/uninstall files for service packs and patches could easily free up 500MB. You could run the Disk Cleanup Wizard and see what other space could be reclaimed by moving/deleting other items. In the worst-case scenario, you could probably compress some of the directories on C: and come up with the space. I wouldn't recommend compressing system directories since that will cause a performance hit, though technically Windows is smart enough to not compress files that shouldn't be compressed.

Win 2000 partition limitation is a royal pain

Also search for *.tmp, delete contents of all \temp folders
