Windows 2000 server drops internet connection

Hi,

We have a windows 2000 server with 2 NIC's. One NIC is assigned to the IP of our router (ADSL modem). On a regular basis our internet connection is dropped and a restart of the server is required to reactive the internet connection. Can anyone advise me on how to start debugging this problem, i.e logs, services etc as I am not overly familiar with how windows 2000 server works with regards to internet connections?

Could you describe the setup in more detail?

Are you using a dedicated, seperate router/modem combined, or is the server connected directly to a modem, & thus the server is acting as a router?

I have several questions.

ADSL lines are very touchy. Look at the line first, then check the server.

Unless you're using that server as a router, then you don't need both NICs enabled. disable the one that doesn't serve a purpose. That could be causing it. You can disable it by going to start>setting>network and dialup connections. Right click the NIC that you're not using and click "disable."

Are you running DHCP or DNS from the router? If so, this would be a good place to start. Next time it happens, check out the router. When you look at the router, pay close attention to the log files.

Next time it happens, don't restart the server. Instead, try to following.
Ping yahoo.com. If you get no responce, ping yahoo's gateway address or 66.218.71.198. If you get a response from the IP address and not the domain name, it's a DNS issue.

Detailed description:

When I say router I am talking specifically about the ADSL modem which our provider also refers to as 'the router'

1 server, 4 workstastions all connected on a single LAN
The router is also connected to the LAN and has a pre assigned IP address aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd from our provider

1 NIC in the server is assigned to the servers IP address and the send NIC is assigned to aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd (the routers IP)

When the internet connection goes down I can still ping the adsl modem's IP (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd) and it replys fine, the lights also suggest it is still connected to the internet but something at the server end is blocking any communication.

We dont specifically run DHCP or DNS - I have not setup any of these up manually so assume they are not being used. This is just a plain server used to hold all our company files.
