Hey all-

My Windows 2000 server native backup doesn't see my hpStorageWorks 20/40 GB DLT drive.. Device manager sees the scsi card that in which the drive in initially attached to and under Tape Drives, the drive is also there.. what I can't seem to do is create a Windows 2000 backup pointing to this drive.. what gives.. do I need specific tape tools or something in order for this to work with Windows 2000 backup, or is there a way to assign this external tape drive a drive letter so that I can point my backup to it??

thanks for any help you can provide and have a good evening!

Does your tape drive show up in Computer Management-Storage-Removable Storage-Physical Locations?
For instance I have an old dds drive and it shows up like
HP C5638A SCSI Sequential Drive.

If your tape drive doesn't show up here you probably require to load some drivers for your unit.

If on the other hand it does show up have a look at this faq faq96-5023

Thx Jump1ng,

I'll check that today, I don't beleive I saw it there yesterday and I think I checked it but will verify today.. I did load drivers for it but it may need what I assume are called "tape tools" or something to that effect.. I will check though...
thx again

Jump1ng,

Yeah, it doesn't come up in Removable Storage, just the native CD rom drive and don't know why thats even coming up in that area.. the external drive is an hpStorageWorks 20/40 GB DLT drive.. I downloaded what I thought were the correct drivers and executed them but this didn't make it come up in Removable Storage at all. What to do, what to do?

you have to prepare your tape before it'll show up in ntbackup. you prepare it in comp. management

Hi Patrichek-

Thx, can you provide any detailed measures as far as doing this? I'm having difficulty figuring where to begin.. the SCSI card is coming up correctly in comp mnmgt and the tape drive is also coming up under tape drives within comp mnmgt, just isn't witnessed by ntbackup for some odd reason.. don't know what to try next..

All-

I just downloaded the hp tape tools.. There is a diagnostic and utility feature.. I hope this helps or else this drive is not going to be backing up anything, I'm going into the office tomorrow (sunday ugh!!) to give it a try, if anyone has any further ideas Please.. feel free and let me know.

i haven't used it in a while but i think you right click on media and create new pool. someone else can chime in any time now.

Hi gman10,

Did you find a solution for that problem? i have the same problem with ntbackup but my tape drive is a Compaq 20/40 DDS3, and the ntbackup does not see 4mm to select destination backup. It appears "unselectable" and only shows the word "File".

I already try new drivers, connect and disconnect, shutting down and restart the server, computer management, preparing media, etc. and nothing works.

Thanks.
