I have added a Windows 2000 Server to a Peer to Peer network and cannot access the internet.

Before:
Peer to Peer network consisting of: 4 Windows 2000 Professional computers, 2 Windows 98 computers, SMC Router, 2 switches, Cable modem to internet connected to router, all on same work group. Everything worked great. However, company needed Exchange Server 2000 capabilities.

Installation:
Bought a Xeon server. Installed Windows 2000 Server, chose the Only server on the network option which automatically installs the DHCP and DNS servers. Since the company has no registered internet name, the two fields naming the domain were filled in with <company> and “local” creating “company.local” for the domain name. It also automatically gave the server an IP address of 10.10.1.1 and sets up all clients to lease address in the range of 10.0.0.3 to 10.0.0.254. The Sever is connected to the network and is able to access the routers configuration screens through the browser using the appropriate IP address. The router is assigned an IP address by the ISP and has a changeable IP address on the internal network side. DHCP has be disabled in the SMC router. I have not configured any of the clients to use the Server as yet. First I wanted to make sure that I can access the internet from the Server.

Problem:
At this point, I cannot gain access to the internet from the server. I can access the SMC routers configuration and modify it, but I cannot reach the internet. I have tried setting up Remote access and Router but no luck and have deleted all I’ve done in that regards. I’ve set up the router’s local network address to 10.10.1.2 and worked with that awhile, then set it to 10.0.0.1 and worked with that awhile, and still cannot get access to the internet.

Question:
How do I get Windows 2000 Server to access the internet through the SMC router?

Ok you have a lot of things to do, and a few you could do.
you can get a free dynamic sub domain from which would let you users send and receve external email.
did you configure you server to use the isp's dns servers at in at least oneline?
for sanity I would:
set the router to 10.0.0.1
set the server to 10.0.0.2
dhcp pool 10.0.0.20 -10.0.0.100
printers if any use 10.0.0.10-10.0.0.19
that will keep every thing orginized with room for grow.

the server should have dns dhcp installed
use the local dns for in house services
the server in local domain, intranet site
server tcpip config would be
ip address 10.0.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.192
gateway 10.0.0.1
dns 10.0.0.2
dns2 (isp dns server)
use same dns and gateway for dhcp pool

Exchange requires a domain and exchange 2000 requires active directory.
I hope this helps give you a good start.

How about Nat configured on your internal router Public interface / private interface Anthony Cabanas

gosemer (MIS),

I have changed everything to the following:

Router: 192.168.2.1 (Default)
Server: 192.168.2.2
DHCP Pool 192.168.2.100 - 192.168.2.199

Server has DNS and DHCP installed and running.

Server TCP/IP config as follows:
IP Address: 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
DNS: 192.168.2.2
DNS2: (ISP's DNS Server)

I have access to the router's configuration using the IE browser by putting in 192.168.2.1:88 and I can configure anything I wish. But I still cannot get onto the internet from the server. The other computers on the local netword (none have been configured to use the domain server yet) can access the internet through the router with no problem.

So, as far as I can tell, I have done all that you have suggested (just different IP addresses).

LiNetTech (TechnicalUser),

Since the router already works to allow access to the network from the internal peer to peer network, isn't it already doing the proper translation?

can you ping and internet domains ex. ping if that fails then try 216.239.39.101 if that works try going to that site. (which is google) can you type in an ipconfig /all on the server and one 2000 workstation and paste it into your reply?

rfmeyer this is why i had mentioned that about nat with out nat configred on that server as per:
I have tried setting up Remote access and Router but no luck and have deleted all I’ve done in that regards. I’ve set up the router’s local network address to 10.10.1.2 and worked with that awhile, then set it to 10.0.0.1 and worked with that awhile, and still cannot get access to the internet.
if you set up routing on that server then you would have the router as your first router from ISP to the server wich in case of use would be you DMZ and a good firewall , then on the SERVER you would have to enable nat on that if buy chance and please correct me if i am wrong you mentione that you have installed r/rass on the server ! you would need Nat to work with it , That would be also a second firewall as well ! But if things are correct then it could be a dns problem as what i could see Gosemer looking at ...........

Also back to basics is the browser on ther server configured the same way as the pc's?

All, Yesterday I hire a consultant. All I needed to do was to do a forward in the DNS. Which is what I thought to begin with, but it was disabled. The reason it was disabled was because I had configured Windows 2000 Server with the Configure Wizard. I selected the first option which was some like this is the only server on the network. That selection automatically installs DNS DHCP and Active Directory. When it installed them, it disabled forwarding in the DNS claiming that a root computer cannot forward. The consultant had me uninstall Active Directory and reisntall it manually, then delete and add the DNS server. That allowed forwarding. I forwarded to the router and I was able to get onto the internet using domain names such as So, there is something wrong with the configure wizard, do it manually.

As you can see, there was no need for a NAT table and one was not installed.

Thanks for you help.

If you happen to use the AD wizard... remember to remove the "." zone. this will prevent you from forwarding anything... then restart your machine... then everything should be alright.

Fine you got it to work thats great ! But i guess i misunderstood what you where looking to do ! I thought you where going to use the SMZ router and a internal router as well ! Sorry for the suggestion ............... Anthony Cabanas

! But if things are correct then it could be a dns problem as what i could see Gosemer looking at ........... so i guess i was on the right track With you DNS PROBLEM ............ You had mentione something about routing and rass on that machine This is why i had mentioned Nat ...................
