I have a 2000 machine and it will not let me run scandisk. No matter what I do it will always tell me "the disk check could not be performed because exclusive access of the drive could not be obtained." I have disabled all startup programs like McAfee and what not. I have also been feeling pains with Word and Excel. I try to go to the file menu and it sits there and takes forever before it comes up. Then it is extremely slow when trying to open and save. Could this be related? I have set my paging file from 384 to 768 and I have 128Mb of memory. Processor is at 550. Any ideas on how to up performance or fix this issue?

Thanks!

T

One idea on how to "up performance", the Help file for pagefile.sys gives 1.5 times the physical memory [RAM] as the recommended size. 128MB times 1.5 equals 192MB.

Err, are you running scandisk, or chkdsk?

I'd run chkdsk - if it can't get "exclusive" access to the disk, then it will offer you the chance to "have chkdsk run next time you boot up windows".

Just make sure you set the /F (fix errors) or /R (fix errors and locate bad sectors*) flag, if you want a thorough, read/write check.

* Note that the /R flag will take a long time to run. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

It did do the chkdsk when we rebooted the machine. Of course didn't allow us to go in and do the scandisk in windows. I will try the flags.

About the performance...I know that it is "required" to put the page file to 1.5 time the memory, but I would think that it would be better if you went 3 times the amount of memory. That would only make sense to me. I've run into problems where it was complaining about not enough virtual memory when it was already set to 2.5 times the memory.

So any more ideas would be great!

Thanks

dear friend

try to reformat you hardisk with the command format hardisk /c /s /u. And if there is a bad sector will come out replace your hardisk cause it has a damage but if there no bad sector install now your operating system and software "set your bios to the defaul setting every thing in default" if low memory will still display in your pc try to replace it with new one that is running with pc133 memory size of 256mb

Your Win2k is on NTFS right? Because of security issues you can't run scandisk on a boot partition when your OS is running. The only solution is to use checkdisk /r or /f as suggested above. Another solution is to take the hard drive out and plug it into another computer with a different system so it will no longer be the boot partition on that computer. You can then do scan disk.
