I thought windows 2000 would be just as fast as 98 or faster. I am really disappointed with the performance.

Am I doing something wrong.

I have a Gigabyte motherboard with an AMD K6-2 500 CPU and 128 MB of RAM.

Am I just better off with Win 98 if I want speed?

Please email if you can labjr@coollinknet

Thanks

That really depends, what is slower? your games , or your bussiness applications, Win2k has been very stable for me.

It really depends on what you do with it.

On my home system (K6-200, 256 MB RAM) I found 2K to be quite a bit faster both on boot and in operation. Compaq is heavily advertising it's new Win2K systems claiming that 2K is up to 30% faster.

If you're running a lot of gamse or old 16bit code, it's probably slower but, in anything else, it should be faster.

If everything seems to be going well: you don't have enough information.......

I'm running W2P also and it is far more better than Win98. Check your system info and see what conflicts or resources you may be having. Also go to Task Mgr and check which hogs down your pc. Hope this helps...

:)

I would say parts of 2K is faster.. BUT.. on both my clone and Compaq laptop ( M700), the cut and paste function is dog slow to get the menus and the pasting of the data. MS could not help so I just live with it for now. Unless someone else has a clue?

PS dog-slow is a 2-5 second wait from right click to menu showing and the same for pasting

Hi, Windows 2000 Professional needs 64 MB of RAM, if you MUCH Memory then 128 MB then it will run faster.
Hope that help.

Hi, Windows 2000 Professional needs minimum 64 MB of RAM, if you use more Memory then 128 MB then it will run faster.
Hope that help.

Yep.. know that.. I'm running a 198meg on the laptop and 256meg on the desktop.. still slow as a dog. I thought the laptop would be speedy with name brand parts and the fact MS and Compaq have a long history.

THe only saving grace for the laptop is 2Ks stability and battery life is great. So I suffer..

Hello there!

It must be something wrong - with what I don´t know.

I´m running WIN2K Pro on a P133 with 100MB EDO memory with an old motherboard (BIOS fromn 1996), and it´s far more fast in operation, but just as the same as WIN 98 in booting. I suppose you mean WIN 2K Pro and not server or advanced server, of which I have no experience...

Compiling code, opening "My computer" and animating right-click-menus is much faster than in WIN 98...

Something must be wrong.

You don´t happen to run several Database services smultaneously, such as Server Manager (Oracle) or DB2 or SQL Server. If you do, then it can slow down the computer...?

But with your configuration...hmmm

Hello again!

It could be that WIN2K is optimized for Intel processors, but that sounds unlikely...

I'm convinced it's something to do with the video but darned if I know what. I spent some time with MS on the phone but they gave ( ie.. no call back). The clone is worse then the laptop granted.. but neither are as fast in apparent response time as my "old" PII 300 with 98 on it. It's quite sad when I can right click to cut something and count "1000,1001,1002" and then the menu shows up. System processer is showing NO load.. it's just slo
And yes, this is Win2K upgrade. Both were installed on clean systems. Both are using the most current MS and vendor drivers.

::sigh::

Windows 2000 is based on the NT kernal which uses the HAL (Hardware Abstract Layer)to access hardware. Software apps will run faster under 2000. anything that accesses the hardware will be a bit slower. With 128MB RAM or more you should notice a good increase in app startup times. Bootup will always be slower because of all the services that need started. If you want gaming speed Windows98 is the best choice.
