Windows 2000 Product Key

I have stupidly lost the jewel case for this software so I need a product key! Another tech site says that it is available from another machine by looking in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version but this is wrong as the code there is just numbers and only 21 digits long (I have a laptop with W2K Pro installed and I am using the same media).

Does anyone know how to find the product key?

AFAIK you cant.
There is a long running thread on this subject in this forum, I suggest doing a search to try and locate it and see what the outcome was.
Other than that - If you registered the copy you may be able to ask Microsoft.

magicka, there is a piece of software out there called dr. hardware that will identify everything on your computer and in most cases will give the reg number.

The installation key is just that. It is not necessarily the license number. In the case of most MS products, this key only allows for installation and is not kept by the system. Recently, MS has been using 5x5 keys, that is, 5 sets of 5 characters, for installation. The license is a 5-3-7-5 sequence of numbers, not matching the install key.

If the BeLarc report shows that Office is already installed, the license will appear. Use that to call MS and they may be able to help you with a new key. (BTW, most MS operating system licenses only allow for use on one PC, not multiple installs unless license packs are purchased.)
