It gets to the splash screen, and looks as if the desktop will come up with a blue background, but auto reboots immediately. I've tried safe mode, Last Known Good Config, and a repair install.

Need to get the PC up and working by 3:00pm as it's an important PC for a client. Currently running it as we speak as a data(slave) drive in my work machine and running a virus scan. Anything else we can try? I suspect a virus because of the first few options I tried should have cleared up a system driver/file startup problem.

Thanks.

It sounds like some of your important windows files have been corupted, I would run check on the hard drive with the tools of the manufacturer.

If the drive pass the test, insert your win2k cd and use repair. On the first screen where it prompts for fresh install or repair chose fresh install. Windows should then do another check on the disk and find your old windows install and now do repair.

The reason the 2nd option is better is because it keeps your current profiles and installed programs etc.

If the drive fails the test I would try ghosting it to a new drive and then do a repair to salvage the system.

I'll try that 2nd repair option.

It's an old Fujitsu drive, I don't even know what kind or know anything about Fujitsu drives and their diag utilities.

Drive seems to be running fine though from my standpoint, and just looking for a quick fix for now to get this up and running the O/S. Let me try the 2nd repair.

Fujitsu....I don't trust Fujitsu drives and would get it replaced or keep a ghost backup of the systems on another disk.

The reason I don't trust Fujitsu drives is that the company I used to work for used to buy fujitsu drives but they kept dying on our customers, alot more frequent than other makes of drives. In the end we had almost replaced all the fujitsu drives with other brands. Plus when they failed they usually "died" so violently staight away that it wasn't possible to get any data of the drive which meant hours rebuilding the system and usually loss of data due to the customer not having a proper backup in place.

But thats just my experience maybe other people can tell you diffrently.

You say that the drive is old, it might just be that you are starting to see the first signs of it breaking. If its been running perfectly for months/years and just suddenly you started having the problem with the drive/system definately do a check on the hard drive.

Look here for the fujitsu disk tools.
or

Even if you get the system up and running again, because if its the drive thats starting to go faulty you might be able to ghost it to another new drive and save you a lot of time and effort.

The in-place repair install did the trick. It basically ran through an entire Win 2k install all over again.

The client wants to replace the entire PC soon. I'll mention to the client about the drive, but because he's getting a new PC soon he probably won't want to spend more labour hours on this old piece of junk. :)
