I have installed windows 2000 and then run the active directory wizard (including letting it configure its own DNS server) once the machine has rebooted and i press CTRL-ALT-DEL to log in it just sits there (mouse working, numlock working) with the pointer on the screen doing nothing - I can't even try and log in.

If i do a F8 and restore directory services it come up fine in its safe mode but as soon as I reboot it does exactly the same thing as above.

It is a P4 with 256mb memory and a 19Gb SCSi disk. It is sitting on its own hub with no other devices. DNS is at 127.0.0.1, ip is 10.10.10.1 and gateway is not set.

How long have you left it.

The first reboot can take a very long time, ie a couple of hours. Chris Styles

I left it on overnight and when i checked this morning - exactly the same...

Any other ideas?

As this is urgent I'm going to reload it and then configure DNS myself

Try a reboot without it connected to the hub.

This normally stops the "preparing network connections" problem, do you get that far?

Might be work booting into safe mode and disabling some of the services. Ie , DNS etc.

Configuring DNS yourself for active directory is a big job. There are a few technet articles about the enteries required, see..q294328, q178169.

Is the server a branded machine, if not most likely this is hardware related. Try a swap out for the NIC, RAM etc. And check the HCL for your motherboard.

Hope this helps. Chris Styles

Its a Fujitsu Siemens rack unit. No probs with any other Fujitsu Siemens stuff before.

It does the preparing network connectins bit etc no probs its just at the moment you press CTRL-ALT-DEL that the dialogs disappear and the mouse pointer is just sitting there. It should be asking for username and password but never gets there.

The only thing I'm not sure of is the Fujitsu runs Duplex Data Manager. I've never seen this before or used it.

Sorry, I missed the bit about you getting to the ctrl etc bit.

Looks like a netlogon failure somwhere. It isn't explorer so the next thing to do is try a repair from the CD. What service pack was the machine on? What service pack do you have on the CD. A role back by this method might get you up and running. Chris Styles
