Windows 2000 and Network connection

Dear Readers,

when I am booting up my Windows 2000 Prof. machine it takes ages for my other machines to 'see' the 2k Machine. It sometimes doesn't happen it all.

I am running an TCP/IP LAN with fixed ipnrs and a proxy server (which is also the 2000 machine). The different machines are 95, 98 and NT machines. However as I mentioned above the communication will not work.

I am able to ping the different machines, I can not map drives/enter them by the other proper methods.

I would really appriciate the help,

Do you have Netbios enabled in the TCP/IP properties of the W2K machine?

I am assuming, since you didn't mention it, that you are not using any name servers, aka. DNS/WINS.

No I didn't. I don't use them at all. Just static ipaddress and the 'normall' subnet mask. The other pc's on the LAN use the proxy server (Win 2k machine I am mentioning) as their gateway setting.

Shares are based on using Netbios or NB over a UDP connection.Port 137 if I remember right?? You need some type of name resolution for it work properly. MS recommends WINS ( surprise!) and yes it does work in a small LAN without much ado. When you start crossing subnet boundries it much more interesting! How are the workstations configured? M node? H node? You can run this LAN as peer to peer which is what you are trying to do right now but as you can see, it's not the most reliable way to do biz. You need to get the Master Browser issues straighten out for it work right.
