I have windows98 SE on my computer with maxed out memory of 384 megs and have cacheman running to try and keep my resources up and the machines is still sluggish. I also have a program running to check my cpu temp and that is normal, it never seems to rise. The system tell me that i'm only using about 20% of my memory. With cacheman running the windows resources go from 70 to 40%. Where are all my resources going? I went through msconfig and took out what i didn't need. Did a scandisk and defrag and the resources are still lousy. went into safe modde and took out all mutiples of hardware in device manager also. I have a Compaq 5360.

If you disable cacheman does it improve? Tell us what all is checked in msconfig? Or get Startlog.com from below and run it then copy and paste the results of just Startlog (not the stubpaths file) to your reply here so we can see it.

Also, have you deleted all your temporary internet files through internet options and have you cleaned the temp folder at c:\windows\temp? Worth a shot if you haven't.

Thanks for the info kento. This the startup log that i ran.I have the mscofig down to bare minimum. Don't think i can trim much more out of that. When i shut off cacheman it only improves by 6%. I know i have a few items running in my taskbar, but i figure withe total ram i have it should handle it. Would it be that windows it self doing all the damage here. Any more help would be apreciated thank you

This is overkill I know , some information may not be relevant , but

Windows Resources vs. Memory

More Resource Leak-Tweaks .

System Resources .
GDI and User Resources explained .

Free up Conventional Memory .

Well this entry is suspicious to me. Shell"="c:\\ray.exe Do you happen to know what that is? If you don't then uncheck it in msconfig.

I think you can uncheck the following to free up some more resources.

EM_EXEC --If you only use the basic buttons and the scroll wheel of your Logitech mouse then you can uncheck this. If you use the other features of the mouse's software then leave it checked. I have it unchecked on mine.

OEMCLEANUP --you can uncheck this.
LoadQM --you can uncheck this.
CriticalUpdate --you can uncheck this.
ConfigServices --you can uncheck this.
SchedulingAgent --you can uncheck this if you don't use scheduled tasks.
HC Reminder --you can uncheck this.

If you also disable Messenger and Weatherbug do things improve? I've heard those two are resource hogs but i don't use them. I see you also have Webshots. It might be using alot of resources too but i'm not sure. Try disabling it also as a test and see if things improve.

You also have shortcuts to Find Fast, Office and Webshots in your Startup folder.

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\Microsoft Find Fast.lnk
C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\Office Startup.lnk
C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\Webshots.lnk

As a test, open the Startup folder and move the Find Fast, Webshots and Office shorcuts into another folder then restart. Do things improve without them running in the background?

Thanks kento, That tip helped out a ton. Bumped up my resources up to 90%. I owe ya one:). Everything seems to be working great now thank you.
