When I press Window Key-E it takes several seconds to bring up Explorer. This is unusual. When I click on "My Computer" or the "Windows Explorer" icon, it brings it up instantly. I also tried giving Windows Explorer a seperate shortcut key (e.g. CTRL-ALT-E) and this is slow as well. So it appears to be a problem only with the shortcut keys.

I am running on Win2k SP4. I just recently moved to a faster machine with a faster hard drive, yet my older machine responds quickly to shortcuts and control panel loads faster as well. I have reinstalled everything from scratch on this new machine, and the only software that is new is Visual Studio 2003, IIS, and SQL Server. I have disabled all of the services that IIS and SQL Server use, but no difference.

Sorry, this is a bit of a trivial issue, but I press Window Key-E many many times a day.

Hey thanks for the keyboard shortcut tip! I didn't know about that one. Does the older machine that responds faster to the shortcut have SP4 on it? SP4 addresses many security issues, and it is possible that keyboard shortcuts now go through some kind of security check before executing. It's just a hypothesis.

For faster access to Windows Explorer, I created a Quick Launch shortcut in the task bar so I no longer have to drill down multiple menu items to get to it.

Yeah, both machines are running SP4. I am somewhat suspecting the difference in drives is causing the slowdown. Maybe it takes more time to scan the drives, since the new machine has a 120GB partitioned to two 60GB partitions, and the old machine has only a 10GB. But then it doesn't make sense that the clicking on the shortcut is faster than using the keyboard shortcut.

BTW, another cool keyboard shortcut I discovered recently is Window-Break which brings up your system properties. Check out this list for more:
