Qestion--> How can I remove an Icon from the Window98 Control Panel?

Generally, it isn't a good idea to remove an icon from the control panel (you might need it, someday). A better solution is to restrict access to applet using the registry. See the Win98 FAQ about preventing users from changing display settings.
Practically every aspect of Windows can be controlled through the registry. If the icon you wish to restrict is not listed in the FAQ, post back and I will post the registry key.

Sure, you can do the same thing with the Policy Editor. But after seeing admins reinstall Windows to correct their mistakes, I am not a big fan of poledit.exe.

<a href= plain black box
if Using Poledit make Sure you save a File First And Call It Orig.pol, If You Get Lost after you can always restore from here after
Tim Dodgson
t_dodgson@yahoo.com
<a href=
I would like to removed the "ATI Multimedia Center" icon.
Could you please tell me which Key this is in the register, I certainly can not find it. I want to remove it because it is not needed since I returned the ATI video card.

PS The uninstall program did not removed the Icon.

I had thought you had intended to remove one of the Windows applets from the control panel. If the uninstall program was successful in removing the program but just had a problem romoving the applet from the control panel, you may not cause any serious damage by simply deleting the associated CPL (but you might, so do the following at your own risk...)

Click the start button, click "find", "files or folders", browse to the Windows\System folder and search for *.CPL. Selecting the right file may take a while but you may have some clues. For instance, the file name may contain the letters "ATI".

Right click on the suspicious file, click "Open with Control Panel" and check to verify that it is the correct applet. When you find it, change the file extention to CP_.

Reboot your computer and verify that everything works properly. If not, find the file and rename it with a CPL extention. Then check back here.

I'm sorry I couldn't provide an easier way to do this but I'm not familiar with the ATI Multimedia Center or the changes it makes to the system. Perhaps another member could clarify....

<img src=

<a href= plain black box
