Window 2000 Sound problems

I am using Apple QuickTime Version 6 on Win 2000. I have Windows patched up todate.

When I play any movie, the sound is plain wrong. It seems to "flicker" i.e. it is really jerky and quite unlistenable.

Has anyone had similar problems/knows how to fix it?

All information appreciated.

Although you mention QT6 you didn't say what format the movie was in. If it's NOT a .mov file then the problem is possibly down to an incorrect audio codec.
If it is a .mov, does the "sample" clip that comes with QT6 work ok?

I get the same thing with all *.mov and *.wav's. I have never heard the sound through QuickTime 6 work properly.

What is more I know that the files themselves are okay because I have run them on different machines (with QT 6 and they sound fine) and I know it is not the sound drivers on this PC because I can play mpg's and mp3's okay using different players.

Have you got the latest directx (8 upwards) installed on the machine?

Have you tried changing the sound out option (edit menu-> preferences->quicktime preferences - sound out, and try playing with the options - if you havent already?)

It might be as simple as not having Ultra DMA enabled for your hard drives. Go to the Device Manager and select:

IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

Double click on "Primary IDE Channel"

Click the "Advanced Settings" tab

Change the Transfer Mode to "DMA if available"

Do this for both IDE Channels (if you have 2). All current IDE devices should use UltraDMA and not PIO mode.
