Hi, I've just been given an old Astra 600p in working order. (I've seen it working.) When I got it home installed the drivers and cabled it up the scanner test in vista scan refuses to find it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, checked the cable with the printer, adjusting the LPT1 settings in the BIOS. Its set to EPP and 0278. I've run out of ideas. Can anyone help?

Cheers

Must be parallel port. If you have the "both epp & ecp" setting in your bios, try that, as opposed to just the epp setting alone.

Tried that - no change still unable to detect. Any more ideas?

Well, if i recall correctly, there is this software thing and i cant think of the name of it now, its been so long since i did any scanner work. Oh yes, its called 'twain" i think.
See if you have twain mentioned in "my computer" or device manager. Are there any yellow or red marks at all in device mgr?
This is likely not your problem but i had a few astra scanners and these devils decided to start charging for drivers for win xp, but i have them and got them free. For a while they were not on the US website but they were on another umax website, like south america or europe, cant remember, but often if you cant find a driver on US website try other countries and you will find them, lol. This is not likely the problem here as you are using win98se. Are you sure you have the right drivers?
Another thing would be to uninstall and re-install the drivers, cant hurt to try that and it has sometimes fixed a problem. Some hardware you have to install the drivers before you install the software. I dont know if you had the scanner hooked up before you installed the software but its worth a try!

Thanks for that garebo. I'll try reinstalling drivers etc from scratch before connecting etc.

btw. The astra terminator stuff i think applies only to scsi scanners, mine is the parallel one.

also what do i need from buzzsoft? theres loads of downloads, which one do i need?

cheers

Hi Active

I cant remember about your exact scanner, but a lot of them are parallel and still are recognized by win98se as scsi.
But yours is parallel and may be recognized as parallel in dev mgr.
By the way, do you have a parallel port printer installed?
It could even be you have to uninstall parallel port drinter drivers and then install your scanner drivers, then plug your scanner in and get it working, then install printer and drivers. Just a possibility.
Before you uninstall, have a look at your device mgr and see what its listed under, if indeed at all since you cant get it to work.

Let us know the results and are there any red or yellow marks in dev mgr?

As for the downloads, i dont know, it would go by your scanner, Astra 600p. But if you have a Umax astra cd with drivers for win98se you can just use them. If i recall that cd would have lots of other drivers as well, so make sure you install only atra 600p. I think you also have to install more programs or drivers after just the scanner drivers, right? They would either be on a separate cd or even on the one cd with the astra drivers,i cant remember its been so long and i am an old, 53 yr old codger.
