I have reformatted from Win ME to 98SE. Modem worked fine in ME but now does not appear in Device manager and can not be found when I search for new devices. When I manually install modem it says that the device is installed and working fine but the dialer cannot detect the modem. There are two other PCI devices that the computer tries to install but can't find the drivers for them. I suspect that these are for the modem but when I choose a standard modem to install the same thing happens.
I know this will be something so simple but I can't figure it out. Help Please!!

Boot to safe mode.
Remove all modems, and com ports from device mangler.
Remove anything in "Other devices" as well.
Restart, and have the modem drivers disk handy. Cheers,
Jim

Will try safe mode but do not have driver disk. Modem came with computer & ME preinstalled.

Pick on of the Devices with a question mark
and "install a new driver" to it. Try using your modem drivers where it says have disk.

I have had this problem a number of times for different devices.

Try looking on the web for newer drivers for your modem,
that maybe what ME is using...

Restarted and it found a com port the LPT port and 2 unknown devices. A PCI Multimedia Audio Device but can't find the driver for it and a PCI Communications Device and can't find the driver for it either. When inspecting the modem there is a reference to Motorola FM-56 PCI/MT-US on one of the bits but nothing other than that to indicate who made it. A search of the Motorola website revealed zip!

I prefer 98SE over ME myself, however,
normally you want to get your drivers together before you migrate...been there down that tooooo.

Try a Google search on FM-56PCI/MT-US see where it takes you I think to a win98 driver.

When I click on either link and click on a driver to download, I get a page not found error. Any suggestions?

I sownloaded the driver and extracted it to the hard drive choose the location and installed it. Dialer can still not detect modem.
I feel really dumb.

I'm trying it again and it asks me to choose a port. Should it be one or two?

Tried to install it on Com 1 and dialer still can't detect modem.
Anymore ideas please?

You can't choose a port. The modem is on it's port, and not a system port.
Shutdown and take the modem out of the computer.
Boot to safe mode, remove all modems and com ports from device mangler, also remove anything in "Other Devices"
Restart, go into the BIOS setup.
Disable com 2.
Set "PnP OS Installed" to NO.
Set "Reset configuration data" to YES.
Restart, let things install, shutdown.
Put the modem back in, and restart.
When prompted, browse to the extracted file you downloaded.
Cheers,
Jim
