We are having Subnet issues with our win 98 pc's. They keep losing the correct Subnet. It should be 255.255.255.0 and it goes to 255.255.0.0. Has anyone had this issue??

Hi Wilcats,

It's got to do with network classes. Classes and subnets go hand in hand:

Imagine an IP address like aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd

If you look at the first number in the IP adress (aaa), then it looks like this:

aaa is 1-126

Class A, network address is aaa (1-126), host address is bbb.ccc.ddd, subnet is 255.0.0.0, max 255^3 PCs per network.

aaa is 128-192

Class B, network address is aaa.bbb, host address is ccc.ddd, subnet is 255.255.0.0, max 255^2 PCs per network.

aaa is 192-223

Class C, network address is aaa.bbb.ccc, host address is ddd, subnet is 255.255.255.0, max 255 PCs per network.

aaa is 0, 127, 224-255

These addresses is reserved for special purposes <=> don't use.

Hope this can guide you in the right direction!

Good luck

Jakob

Are you using DHCP? Or is it a static setting on the PC? Sounds like the DHCP server is giving them bad info.

We are using a DHCP server.. This is only hapening on our WIN98 pc's. The WIN 2000 pc's have no issues. This is also very sporatic

This could be being caused by the 2000 PCs. Win 2000 likes to act as the DCHP server. I found this out the hard way when I hooked up my laptop Win 2000 to a very stable lab network of Win 98 machines. When I disconnected my laptop all manner of wierd things happened. The solution for me was to assign fixed IP address to to Win 98 machines (that wasn't happening). Or shut off the DCHP service on my laptop. Which solved the problem. In your case a fixed TCP/IP address on the Win 98 machines should solve the random problems.

Hi Wilcats,

A mix of DHCP and fixed IPs can definately cause problems in a mixed 98/2K environment. If you assign a fixed IP to the 98 PC then make sure that to select one that is outside the assign-range of the DHCP server.

Good luck §;O)

Actually, I've seen this specific problem with a DHCP and Win98 machines. To overcome this I had to assign static IP addresses to the 98 machines. Not to fix the IP address, but the subnet mask. As someone said, provide the 98 machines with an IP Address outside the DHCP scope.

Hello Wilcats. The reason for your problem is caused an by an invalid request or response while reqesting an IP from the DHCP server from your client. HKinNYC is right. To overcome this problem, your best bet is to assign a static IP to your client computer and might as well give it a default gateway while you're at it.
