Help! Hopefully this is easy-peasy for you whizzkids out there but dummy here is going nuts!

My Toshiba laptop went into safe mode and wouldn't come out. I was told to reinstall the operating system from my Toshiba recovery disc. I did. It seemed to be working fine until I was asked for the original Windows 98 key number thing. I don't have this as I bought the laptop secondhand and it wasn't supplied.

I now have a laptop that only gives me access to an installation process that I can't complete!

Can I escape from the installation process?

Do I need to get a new copy of Windows 98 plus its number?

Or do I need to borrow a similar Toshiba recovery disc from someone who knows their W98 number?

Or what?

Can't recommend the latter as that would be illegal and unprofessional ::)

Basically, whoever has hold of the original disk, still owns the copyright - I think if you want to be able to use it you are going to have to get hold of another copy - legally of course ;-) Static Apnea - snorkelling in a swimming pool without the snorkel?

I agree. Contact the person you got it from and get the CD key that was supposed to come with it. Do you have a desktop PC at home? Its againt the MS antipiracy code but you COULD use the same one that is on your desktop PC. If you feel that is too unethical then you could call toshiba for help. They may not be forth coming though. Using someone elses recovery disk will get you no where. What you need is the CDkey for Win98 that comes with the instruction book. James Collins
