Please help me understand. . . <br><br>I just upgraded a user, new PC (HP Brio) 128MB, 15G HD, 8MB Video, PIII 600Mhz. Once this user opens a few apps., (Adobe Illustrator, GroupWise email, WORD, the resources drop very fast.<br><br>I know Illustrator can eat up resources, but this much? Any suggestions at what I may look at or change would be appreciated.<br><br>Thank you.

Win98(se) Resources Drop to below 23%

Ok, it has been my experience with local HP's that they can sometimes create huge memory holes. One crazy, but most of the time effective solution is to create a dummy printer (like an old matrix printer, Panasonic or something other than HP) and set it as default, restart your computer, and revert back to your original default, but keep the driver.<br>This might work.<br>

peitzza -<br><br>Tried the printer thing. No improvement.<br>Looking at the virtual memory for this machine, it states: 12760 (windows managing it). Perhaps I should increase it?<br>I've done so with NT, but unsure if the same VM rules apply to 95/98. Suggestions?<br><br>Thanks again!

Just a key of reference, make sure you dont have so many things running, like how many things do you have loaded into your system tray, also just thought you may want to know a behavior about Win95 and Win98, win95 takes up 16 megs reserves it for itself, Win98 takes up 32, which is split down into 2 core system componets, Win16 (as in 16 bit) takes 16M, and Win32 Takes 16 Megs, It may also be possible that your swap drive/file isnt big enough isnt big enough. but check the things that get loaded in startup, whatever drivers you have, TSR things, etc. <p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.8m.com>kb244@kb244.8m.com</a><br><a href= </a><br>Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML, ASP(somewhat), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)

Karl -<br><br>Are you familiar with the SwapFile rule for 98? If currently it shows 12760, could I add 100MB to that figure?<br><br>I did go through and remove some of the startup/systray items. Seems to be better, but again when I open Illustrator that memory drops hard! With nothing else running, I go from 87% free resources to 51% with just one program running. No TSRs running. Nothing in systray except "N" client, volume speaker, and the time.<br><br>Thanks for the feedback.
