I have just added a 512Mb dram simm into my machine but the machine continuously reboots. If I replace the simm with a 64Mb simm everything is fine.

Help !!!

What's your hardware config like? Are you sure your mobo supports 512MB? Even though it might, 512MB is really more than you should use in Win98. 256MB is plenty and it is often recommended that you not exceed 320MB for performance sake...

However, it shouldn't cause your system to continously reboot if your mobo can take it. At what point does it reboot? Past the Windows logo, during, or before?

The mobo accepts 2x512Mb. The machine reboots 1-2 seconds after the windows logo appears. I have looked at the autoexec.bat to see if win.com /w exists, no joy, also added MaxPhysPage=24000 into the system.in [386Enh] section.

Read butchrecon's post in the FAQ section for additional tips. If that doesn't work, try removing all tweaks you've applied. All I can safely say is that it's definitely a conflict with the OS's registry settings.

Regardless of what the culprit is, beware that even if you get it to work, you may never cure lockup problems that are familiar with RAM sizes of 512MB or more in Win98/ME...

I had the same issue with a win 98se box, it turned out that the 250 WT power supply couldn't handle the extra load. I'm not sure if this was caused by the power supply being faulty or not having enough capacity, but suspect that it was not gutsy enough. Replaced PSU with a new 300 WT, and problem dis-appeared. It worked yesterday.
It doesn't work today.
That's Windows!

check the chipset on the mobo.. if its via... then don't have ati or sound blaster cards in there.. get the via patch of their web site.. and download the patches off creative and ati websites..

Via also have memory probs.. Lets say the board can run pc133bus and you only have pc100bus.. it'll restart on ya there too... but only in certain situation..

Just pray it isn't a via board.. believe me, I have to fix them alot....

When in doubt.. reload windows
