Hi,

I am struggling with an audio issue on my PC (win98SE), audio drivers are showing OK in device manager, but any application requiring audio resources would not work. For example, audio parameters in Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control are all greyed out.

The hardware itself is OK, as I have a dual partition HDD with XP installed too. Audio works OK with XP (AC97 audio). Also tried other audio card (SBlive 5.1) -> same issue.

I checked windows 98 system files, no issue found.
I removed duplicates in device manager in safe mode, nothing helped.

I think the issue has something to do with some win98 config files, or WDM audio from win98.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thx.

In some cases, the Device Manager doesn't know if there is a problem with the hardware.

Try to get the NEWEST sound card driver for win98SE.

The install program should install all needed files, and your sound should work normally after install, even if some previous settings were wrong.

(Perhaps you should first delete all drivers that have something to do with audio, so you could have a clean install)

Has the audio ever worked on your Win98SE??
Maybe there is a driver conflict, or an Interrupt Request (IRQ) conflict between hardware.

Cheers
Rubie

Thanks for the reply Rubie,

Yes, the audio was working previously, and there is no driver conflict/IRQ conflict visible. The on-board audio I have works fine when I boot on XP, but not on Win98.

In fact, I also tried with a SBlive 5.1 on my system, and the issue was the same : OK with XP, no audio with Win98 - even though the drivers were with the latest version.

The only difference between now, and when the audio was working is that I added a PCI ADSL card - which by the way works fine. I'll try and remoce the DSL card to see what happens.

Any other idea ?

Thx.

If removing ADSL card works, try putting it back in a different PCI slot.

Hi jcboissy

did you manage to resolve the above issue of yours ?

I am facing exactly the same situation and even posted my issue on the forum lately but so far no joy.

Just thought maybe you had cracked this and would like to share .

Thx
