Hi,
I have a very stange windows98 desktop which need connect to the LAN. Its network card is good and I assign its IP address as 10.65.8.11/255.255.252.0. It can PING itself, but cannot PING the server (10.65.8.1/255.255.252.0). I tested the cable with a another laptop, and it looked cable work well. The whole day, I couldn't found the reason why the desktop cannot reach the server(or the network).

Does the LAN server use DHCP? Is there a reason why you are setting a static IP (of course assuming it's in the right range for your network)?

Also, behind a LAN, the normal range of IP addresses fall under 192.x.x.x

FYI,
According to RFC1918...

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of the IP address space for private internets:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

Your IP address 10.65.8.11/255.255.252.0 is fine, although the subnet is a little unusual.

If another PC works fine on that cable, you can probably discount a physical connection issue.

The next step is...do you have a link light at both ends?
If not, then you may just be trying to plug a 10Mb NIC into a 100Mb switch.

Next step...reload TCP/IP. Use these instructions as a guide:

If the above doesn't work, post back here and let us know.

Good advice dearingkr, and thanks for the correction!

Thank you everybody. I find the cause. It is because the cable. The client connection is T568A, but the panel's is T568B. So the cable is twisted. But I still why the laptop (XP)can PING the server with the twisted cable.
Anyway, thanks all your help and information.
