I have a win2k server running active directory. I will be connecting existing win98 clients to this server and need a login script to map a drive.
What i have so far is a login.bat file located in the following directory on the server:
C:\WINNT\SYSVOL\sysvol\servername\scripts
which is the proper location for the netlogon scripts (i think?). The command inside the .bat file is:
net use x: \\servername\sharename.
I tried putting a pause before the command...just to see if it is even trying to run...but nothing.
I have created a user, given it the location of the login script, yet it doesnt run at login.
any help would be greatly appreciated...and if you could reply to my email as well as here for the rest of us...that would be super.

Thanks.

Is the script being applied through Group Policy or is that the Users logon script assigned in the user account?

I'm not an Windows expert, and this is second hand information, but, I was told that you have to create a computer account in Active Directory to make the scripts run properly. Hopefully, someone with more knowledge than I can answer this for you.

This is a user script only...no group policies

You should have a computer account registered in DNS but you don't have to have it registered in Active Directory. Windows 95/98/Me machines don't authenticate using machine accounts, just user accounts.

Make sure you can access the <server>\sysvol folder from the Windows 98 machine. And then make sure that the Windows 98 machine is setup correctly and loggin into the Domain. Also make sure that your IP settings are correct and the Primary DNS is pointing to the correct server.

ok...other than the computer account registered in dns (which i dont know how to do)...everything else seems to be normal.
I have the logon for the win98 machine looking for the domain...if i use the correct login name i can scan to the directory using network neighborhood (only some users have access to certain directories), but it does not run the script.

You might want to install the DSclient on the Windows 98 machine. You can get it off the Windows 2000 CD.

DSClient.exe

You dont need DS client to run logon scripts on Win9x. Your Win9x computers must logon to domain; your script must be on server's NETLOGON share (your path is OK); logon scripts must be assigned to appropriate users (in AD Users and Computers snap-in -> User properties -> Profile -> Logon script.
Check also access rights for share and your .bat file (default are OK and they are Read for Everyone for share, and Read for Authenticated Users for folder and files).

OK. How can I tell if the client is actually trying to log onto the server? I get the logon screen, with the domain name listed, but there is no indication that it is actually TRYING to get to it?
This may make a difference....the configuration is as follows:
Server set up with domain DOMAIN.local - it is the only server on the local intranet. There are 5 client machines connected through a hub and router combination (for high-speed internet).
All systems are using TCP/IP exclusively and share a common workgroup name (the workgroup name being the same used for the DOMAIN name)
If I have missed something here, please let me know....this is frustrating as I HAVE done this in the past, but not often, and not for quite some time now.

silly me....something so simple and i made it complex.
The problem was I had the logon.bat file in the right place...but I had put the full path to it in the user profile....all I needed to do was put in the actual filename...NOT the full path and filename.
logon.bat instead of c:\winnt\.......\logon.bat

Do you have a WINS server running? This is needed for Win98 clients to know the ip address of you PDC.
