I have an AMD K-6 mobo, and installed a 3COM 3C905B. When I attempt to manage the card, or use the card. The whole system freezes. At this point I have to ctrl-atl-del until reboot.
The MOBO is FIC PA-2013, and the os is WIN98 SE. This is the second NIC I've tried. And, I've tried separate slots as well. (currently, only two are available)
I can't find any hardware conflicts or IRQ conflicts. I've thought about reinstalling WIN98, but only as a last resort.
Make sure you go into hardware profiles and delete ALL references to any Ethernet cards in your system. also something else to check does your MOBO have ethernet built in? if so you might need to change some of the bios settings. once you've checked/deleted any references to the NIC's goto the vendor website and download the latest drivers for your card and then try a clean reboot and install of the cards... that should take care of the problem.
Had similar problems with the 905-C TX, don't know if these are similar. The 905-C has a bootable BIOS that at default looks for network activity at boot, takes about 2 minutes to look until it quits and allows Win98 to load. I believe the DOS software that comes with it allows you to go in and disable the network search completely.
