Hello. I am installing a copy of win 98 on a friends laptop.
I get an error message when use the boot disk
Device driver not found: 'OEMCD001'.
No Valid CDROM device drivers selected
invalid drive specification
invalid directory
bad command of file name
A:\>

What do i need to do
Can someone please help
Thanks

The copy is probably an OEM-cd, valid only for a pre-installed Win98.

Its most likly either the CD-ROM device driver is not loaded in the config.sys (i.e "DEVICE=DRIVERNAME.SYS /d:OEMCD001") or the driver you are using is not compatible with CD-ROM drive that is in the laptop.

If the windows cd is a full version not upgrade you should be able to boot from the CD rather than the disk.

Alternativly the CD-ROM driver that is on the win98 cd called "OAKCDROM.SYS" is fairly universal, so if you can use another PC to get this from the CD to the boot disk and ensure the config.sys says:

DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:OEMCD001

From what you say, you're booting from the A: drive. Have you tried booting the PC from the CD-ROM drive with the WIN98 CD? You might need to later the boot sequence in the BIOS...

Thank you all for your help.
Now have it working thanks to you guys

Cheers

I was trying to install Windows98 on one of my old Pentinum II PC. There is always this error message "MS DOS incompatible with Windows 98". I have tried to use a start up disk, but it doesn't work.

Please help. What should I do next?

You cannot upgrade from MS-DOS to Win98. You will need at least Win3.1 installed or on diskettes.

What happened is that I formatted the whole hard disk and trying to reinstall Win98 again. No matter how many times I fdisk the c: drive, the message keep coming up. What else can I do?

Thank you!

Is your win98 second edition if it is you can try to set your boot order to starting from cd-rom and put your win98 cd in the drive and boot up. win98SE has this function that you do not need to use a boot disk to boot up it has auto boot in the cd.

peiyi, you are formatting after you fdisk correct? Troubled myslef for an hour before i realized i hadn't formatted after i had fdisked the day before.

Yes I am installing the Win98SE from CDROM and have already set the CDROM as my boot drive. But the same message keep coming up! I have also reformatted the disk a few times.

Very frustrated! I thought installing Win98 is a simple task!

The FDISK or FORMAT program loaded from the boot diskette may be defect or of a too old version of DOS.

Get a newer 98se boot disk from and try that. Boot from the new floppy, try re-formatting then restart the PC again from your new floppy this time with CD support then make a new directory called new or somthing goto cd-rom:\win98 then type copy *.* c:\new then restart the PC again with new floppy and run setup from the HD.

You could just try to install from cd with the new boot disk first, the rest of that lot is things I have done in the past to get win98 to install

It is the Full version you've got and not an upgrade isn't it?

Good Luck

*#)

Assuming you have a full version of Win98 SE, you should be able to boot from this CD, and it will automatically take care of both FDISK and FORMAT for you. From the description of your problem it suggests that you may still have the bones of an existing partition on that hard drive. Maybe try a low level format on the disk, and then let Win98 SE apply a partition and format.
