Win98 Hanging

Any idea why if I walk away from the machine for a few mins, come back, Windows 98 crawls and I mean crawls. Works fine as long as I'm using it from boot, but as soon as I leave it to answer the phone or whatever, it seems to have a problem. I've defraged, I've cleaned the hard drive, nothing helps.

Any suggestions?
